About the Artist

HOUSTON L. BELL, JR.

Although I have been an art lover and collector of local art for most of my life, I did not begin painting until after retiring from a 32-year-career as a healthcare executive in southwest Virginia and moving to the Town of Braircliffe Acres, SC in 2005.

Attempting painting, however, was one of the items on my “bucket list” which was created following my fiftieth birthday. Although I did take a few water color classes (a gift from my wife on my sixtieth birthday), I am essentially self- taught with periodic mentoring from artist friends in the community.

I sketch almost daily on the beach using graphite and/ or watercolor pencils. My subject matter varies from what I see on the beach to images from magazines and photographs from our travels. In the studio my medium is watercolor or acrylics, depending on my inspiration for the subject.

My art will always be a work in progress but a labor of love.
